Useful Tips
Remodeling Green

If you want to take steps to ensure that your remodeling project results in a more environmentally friendly and energy efficient environment, then you want to keep reading!  Following are some guidelines taken from the "Regreen" initiative. One of the main principles is that quality construction is paramount whether the project is green or not.  By this, they mean that the final result should not only be efficient, but must be effective in order to be a success.

What comprises a "green" remodel?

Energy efficiency is is just one component of the green revolution.  Also of importance are

  • air quality as affected by choices in interior finishes,
  • re-use of materials when possible,
  • layout for increased resource efficiency,
  • using environmentally friendly and sustainable materials, and
  • providing green living educational guidelines to the home owner.

When remodeling a bathroom, efficient use of water is the key component of a green remodel.  This includes water use and also outgoing flows of vapor and liquid.  Another important aspect is material durability.

How do you remodel green?

The key to a successful green remodel is to plan well from the start.  Following are some tips to ensure your planning leads to an environmentally friendly project execution.

  1. From the point of the initial interview, introduce your desire for a green remodel.  This could impact the discussion points that are addressed.  Things to bring up include
    • Discussing your energy efficiency goals
    • How you may want to utilize natural light more effectively
    • How can removed materials be re-used or recycled
  2. A team might need to integrate differently in order to ensure that a green remodel is achieved.  The small decisions, such as paint and caulk choice or insulation method can make a big difference to the desired outcome of the project.  The best way to coordinate between the team is for the installation manager has detailed plans that highlight all the key green integration components.  This necessitates some training in green principles or potentially hiring a resource to advise on such matters.
  3. Knowledge of building codes and potential restrictions is critical when guiding a green remodel.  Solar panels may not be allowed on a home in a historic district - be sure to check on all municipal codes and neighborhood covenants before designing your green project.
  4. Many of the interior design finishing touches and decorations are handled by the homeowner and not the remodeling contractor.  When choosing linens or upholstery, consider non-synthetic versions for a smaller environmental footprint.  HEPA Air filtration is another means of managing your own impact during a green remodel.  Homeowner education is paramount to achieving the environmental and personal benefits of green living.

Tips for living through a remodel

Kitchen and bath remodels can be quite disruptive to your daily routines.  It is also a significant investment.  Following are some tips to minimize the frustration that can come with having a key room in your home unable to be occupied.

Kitchen Remodel

  • If you have a separate freezer, prepare some meals ahead of time to eat during the remodel
  • Pack up everything in your kitchen into boxes as though you were moving, and don't forget to pack up fragile items in nearby rooms.
  • Tape plastic over the doorways and openings to avoid getting dust throughout the house
  • Set up a temporary kitchen somewhere, preferably near a bathroom or laundry room so you have access to a sink.  A small refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker will let you prepare at least some basic meals.  Use your outdoor grill if possible
  • Stock your temporary kitchen with basic supplies such as disposable plates and utensils, can opener, and prepared foods such as cereal, bread, canned soup and other simple to fix meals.

 Bath Remodel

If you have more than one bathroom in your home, the remodeling process is made easier.  Luckily bathroom remodels are usually quicker than kitchens and thus less disruptive.  But if your primary facilities are unavailable, these tips can help get you through.

  • Have a clear and precise time line worked out with your contractor so you know when demolition will occur and when your bathroom will be unavailable to you.
  • Be organized - set up an alternative vanity area where all of your cosmetics and beauty supplies are available to you.  This can be done by using the top of a dresser, desk or TV tray
  • Change your routine to accommodate the needs of the household.  If a lot of people are suddenly sharing the same bathroom, create a schedule for everyone to follow in the morning and at night.
  • If you have a gym membership consider working out in the mornings and using the shower facilities there!
